This five year project by the Lions culminated in September, 2003, with a formal lighting of the Highway 47 bridge over the Missouri River Bridge at Washington, MO. The engineering was done locally by Washington Engineering & Architecture and the electrical contractor was Gerstner Electric, Inc. from Fenton, Mo. The City of Washington provided many hours of application work and project coordination to obtain a 79% reimbursement from MoDot's Enhancement Fund Program. The bridge was built in the late 1930's and is very narrow when compared to today's standards. Many travelers have commented that the addition of lights on the bridge has definitely improved the safety factory at night. The Lions sold many pork burgers to pay for this project. Major gifts to the Lions were received from Ameren UE and Mrs. Charlotte Leiweke in memory of Leo Leiweke, who was a 46 year member of our Club.
